US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to return to the Middle East this Monday in a renewed effort to establish a ceasefire in Gaza, especially after the recent death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. This marks his 11th visit to the region since the conflict began last year, with the urgency heightened as the US elections approach.
On his last trip to Israel in August, Blinken warned it might be the final opportunity for a US-led ceasefire plan, which ultimately did not come to fruition. The situation has escalated since then, with Israel targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon and threatening strikes on Iran, which supports both Hamas and Hezbollah.
President Biden expressed renewed hope for a ceasefire following Sinwar’s death. During a visit to Germany, he congratulated Prime Minister Netanyahu and conveyed that Blinken would be heading back to the region. Biden stated, “Now is the time to move on — towards a ceasefire.”
The conflict ignited after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel last year, resulting in significant casualties. Israeli military operations in Gaza have also led to a tragic loss of civilian life, with humanitarian concerns growing dire. More than 1.8 million people in Gaza are reportedly facing severe hunger, prompting calls for increased humanitarian aid.
Blinken’s trip comes at a crucial time, as the political landscape in the US remains influenced by the ongoing war. A breakthrough could provide a significant boost to Vice President Kamala Harris, who is in a tight race for the presidency.
