Ugandan Opposition Figure Accuses President Museveni of “Hypocrisy” over World Bank Critique

Ugandan opposition politician and activist, Bobi Wine, has raised allegations of “hypocrisy” against President Yoweri Museveni following his criticism of the World Bank. The World Bank recently announced a halt in new loans to Uganda in response to the country’s stringent anti-gay legislation.

In reaction, President Museveni condemned the World Bank’s decision, alleging that it was attempting to pressure Uganda into overturning the controversial law. However, Bobi Wine has countered, labeling Museveni’s criticism as disingenuous. He accused the president of previously collaborating with the World Bank to privatize Ugandan public service infrastructure.

Bobi Wine expressed his views on the matter, stating, “Your recent outburst about the World Bank withholding future assistance to Uganda is a clear indication of your ideological disorientation and policy nomadism that has characterized your four-decade rule.”

The World Bank asserted that the new anti-LGBT law goes against its core values. While LGBT acts were already illegal in Uganda, the new law, enacted in May, carries the potential penalty of life imprisonment for those convicted.
