The government extends warm congratulations to the Muslim Ummah as they complete the fasting period of Ramadan.

In light of this joyous occasion, the Federal Government has declared Thursday, April 11, 2024, as an additional public holiday to commemorate Eid-El-Fitr. The announcement came via a statement released by Dr. Aishetu Ndayako, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, which was shared on the ministry’s official channels on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

The statement reads, “The Federal Government has approved Thursday, April 11, 2024, as an additional public holiday to celebrate this year’s Eid-El-Fitr.

“The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, extends his heartfelt congratulations to the Muslim Ummah for their dedication throughout the month of spiritual rejuvenation. He reaffirms President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to fostering a safe and prosperous Nigeria for all citizens to thrive.”

Earlier reports from Pulse Nigeria on Monday, April 8, 2024, hinted at the possibility of the Federal Government adding an extra day to the public holiday initially announced for the end-of-Ramadan celebration.

It was anticipated that Ramadan fasting would conclude on Monday, following the announcement of public holidays on Sunday, April 7, 2024, for Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the sighting of the crescent moon, signaling the start of the new Islamic month of Shawwal, did not occur on Monday, necessitating an additional day of fasting for Muslims worldwide.

This decision aligned with the declaration by Saudi Arabia’s authorities that Eid-el-Fitr for 2024 would be observed on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
