Bruno Fernandes made a triumphant return to the Manchester United lineup on Wednesday night, playing a crucial role in their 3-2 victory against Newcastle United in the last match of the season at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old midfielder had been sidelined due to injury for the previous two games, both of which ended in defeats for United with no goals scored.
This was the first time since Fernandes joined the club in 2020 that he had to miss a game due to injury.
In the game against Newcastle, Fernandes made a significant contribution by assisting Rasmus Hojlund, whose goal ultimately secured the win for United, despite a late goal from Lewis Hall for Newcastle, bringing the score to 3-2.
According to sources close to the club, Fernandes wasn’t at full fitness for the match, but he was determined to make himself available for the final game at Old Trafford.
After the match, Fernandes spent nearly two hours outside the stadium, signing autographs and taking selfies with fans. Amid recent speculations about his future at Old Trafford, Fernandes addressed the media, stating that he’s committed to the club as long as they want him.
“I’ll be here as long as the club wants me,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “I believe the club sees me as part of their future plans, and I don’t want to stay where I’m not wanted. If, for any reason, they decide otherwise, I’ll have to move on, but…” Fernandes was then interrupted by manager Ten Hag, who whisked him away for further discussions, cutting short his interview with Sky Sports. Later, Fernandes addressed the Old Trafford crowd with a heartfelt speech.
