Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya, has strongly condemned the tragic attack that occurred in Nkambe town on Sunday, resulting in the death of a teenager and injuries to over 40 others.
In his statement issued on Monday, President Biya characterized the incident, which took place in the conflict-stricken North-West region, as a despicable act perpetrated by individuals lacking courage.
Expressing his heartfelt condolences to the family of Cherish Limnuyu, a 15-year-old student at GHS Nwangri, President Biya also extended his wishes for a swift recovery to all those injured in the incident.
The attack unfolded as students gathered to celebrate Youth Day, only to be met with the detonation of an improvised explosive device planted by separatist fighters near a ceremonial square. These separatists, aiming to disrupt the government-organized youth event, had enforced a “ghost town” strike.
In response to the incident, three suspects have been apprehended, as confirmed by the regional governor. Additionally, a church service was conducted at the site of the explosion to offer support to the victims.
In a poignant display of solidarity, elderly women in Nkambe marched barefoot, holding peace plants, as they denounced the violence that marred Sunday’s events. Nkambe, known for its relative tranquility in the face of regional turmoil, has seen its peace disrupted by this recent attack.
The assault serves to underscore the prevailing concerns regarding the fragile security situation in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions, reigniting fears among residents and highlighting the ongoing challenges of maintaining stability in the area.
