Beijing has taken its case to the World Trade Organization, challenging the European Union’s recent decision to impose extra tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

On August 9, China formally appealed to the WTO’s dispute resolution mechanism in response to the EU’s temporary anti-subsidy measures on EVs, according to a statement from the country’s commerce ministry.

The appeal seeks to protect the electric vehicle sector’s growth and promote global green transformation. The ministry criticized the EU’s ruling, arguing it lacks a solid factual and legal foundation, breaches WTO rules, and disrupts international cooperation on climate change.

China is calling on the EU to reverse its actions to preserve the stability of economic and trade relations between China and Europe and ensure the smooth operation of EV industrial and supply chains.

In July, the EU imposed provisional tariffs of up to 38 percent on Chinese EV imports. This decision followed an investigation by the European Commission, which found that these imports were unfairly disadvantaging European competitors.
