On the eve of an opposition leader’s libel trial, police in Senegal fired tear gas and stun grenades at demonstrators in the capital, Dakar.

Authorities have banned protests in connection with the resumption of Ousmane Sonko’s court case on Thursday, but the main opposition coalition has stated that it will defy the restrictions.

Mr. Sonko is accused of slandering Tourism Minister Mame Mbaye Niang by alleging embezzlement. He denies the allegations.

Sonko would be barred from running in next year’s presidential election if convicted.

Since Mr. Sonko’s defamation trial began on March 16, there has been violence in several cities.

Following deadly protests, President Macky Sall urged police to take all necessary security measures last week.
