Coi Leray’s latest album, COI, debuted at No. 102 on the Billboard 200 chart, garnering approximately 10,000 unit sales in its first week. The 16-track project features notable collaborations with artists such as David Guetta, Saucy Santana, and Lola Brooke.

Expressing her gratitude on Twitter, Leray thanked her fans for their support and acknowledged her three hits on the Hot 100 chart, stating, “I’m super proud of myself.” Her previous album, Trendsetter, released in April 2022, achieved a slightly higher position, reaching No. 89 on the Billboard chart with an initial sale of 11,500 album-equivalent units.

Although the first-week numbers may not have been overwhelming, Leray continues to make waves on the Billboard Hot 100 with her singles. The track “Players” has spent an impressive 25 weeks on the chart and currently holds the No. 48 position. Additionally, her collaborative works like “Self Love” with Metro Boomin from the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse soundtrack and “Baby Don’t Hurt Me” with David Guetta are also making their mark, sitting at No. 61 and No. 79, respectively.

The album’s sales sparked various reactions, and not everyone viewed them negatively. Boosie Badazz and Trinidad James were among those who swiftly praised Leray’s talent. Boosie Badazz even expressed his belief that the project should have sold “at least 100K” in the opening week. He went on to question if the system was somehow rigged or if celebrity kids simply faced more criticism when it came to their achievements. The comments reflect the differing opinions surrounding the album’s performance and the recognition of Leray’s abilities by fellow artists.

Earlier this year, Leray ignited excitement among her peers by proposing a collaborative project aimed at achieving a chart-topping hit in 2023. Expressing her frustration with the lack of a rap song reaching No. 1, she took to Twitter to voice her ambitions. Her vision was further emphasized during her captivating performance at the 2023 BET Awards, where she proudly sported a jacket adorned with the names of influential and emerging female artists.

However, despite the outpouring of support and Leray’s undeniable drive, some fans couldn’t help but feel disappointed with the album’s performance. Instead of attributing the disappointment to the quality of the LP itself, they directed their criticism towards her label’s promotional strategies. Notably, a few critics voiced concerns about what they perceived as unoriginal sampling choices on the project. The diverse range of opinions showcases the varying perspectives surrounding Leray’s latest album and its reception among fans.
