Veteran Hollywood actor John Amos, known for his unforgettable roles in Coming to America and the 1970s hit sitcom Good Times, has passed away at the age of 84.

According to a statement from his son, Kelly Christopher Amos, John Amos died of natural causes on August 21. Kelly paid tribute to his father, reflecting on his generous nature and the lasting impact he had on fans around the globe.

“With deep sadness, I share the news that my father has passed. He was a man with the kindest heart, and he was cherished by many,” Kelly expressed. “For countless fans, he was their ‘TV dad.’ His legacy will live on through his incredible work in both television and film.”

Before stepping into the spotlight, Amos was a former football player at Colorado State University and had training camp stints with the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. He transitioned into acting, where he first gained attention as Gordy Howard, the weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

A native of New Jersey, Amos earned an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of the older Kunta Kinte in the acclaimed 1977 miniseries Roots. He also played Admiral Percy Fitzwallace in NBC’s West Wing.

Amos’ film career began with Melvin Van Peebles’ 1971 classic Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, and he later starred in Coming to America (1988) as the manager of a fast-food restaurant. In a full-circle moment, Amos had previously worked at McDonald’s and appeared in a popular commercial for the chain during the 1970s.

His remarkable contributions to film and television will remain a cherished part of his enduring legacy.
