The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cast doubts on the anti-corruption stance of Vice President and NPP flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.
Referring to allegations made by former GFA strongman Kwesi Nyantakyi and former Deputy Finance Minister Charles Adu Boahen, the NDC labeled the Vice President as an “appearance fee merchant.” These claims suggest that Bawumia could be swayed with money to favor certain bidders in the award of contracts, as revealed in secret recordings.
Sammy Gyamfi, during the NDC’s routine “Moment of Truth” briefings, questioned Bawumia’s ability to combat corruption effectively.
Gyamfi criticized the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government for spending $12 million, equivalent to GH¢153 million, on the failed Agyapa Royalties arrangement, as disclosed in a session of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament. He condemned the expenditure as “unconscionable,” citing it as yet another instance of corruption under the NPP administration.
Gyamfi additionally accused the Vice President of being involved in the PDs scandal by easing stringent requirements, such as the condition precedents of a Bank guarantee.
He argued that the $12 million spent on the Agyapa deal constituted a deliberate financial loss to the state, indicating the NDC’s readiness to investigate the matter and prosecute those responsible if it secures victory in the 2024 elections.
