Release of Convicted Killer of Former South African First Lady Marike de Klerk Scheduled for August.
Luyanda Mboniswa, who committed the murder when he was 21 years old, is due to be released on parole by the end of August. Mboniswa, who worked as a security guard at the former first lady’s apartment block, stabbed and strangled Marike de Klerk, 64 years old at the time, in her Cape Town home in December 2001.
He also stole personal belongings and money before being arrested two days later. He was convicted in May 2003 and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
After twenty years, Mboniswa has been considered for parole placement and will be subject to a set of specific parole conditions for the rest of his life, according to prisons department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo. Marike de Klerk served as South Africa’s first lady from 1989 to 1994, with her husband Frederik Willem de Klerk serving as the country’s president during that time.
