A South African woman who was imprisoned for misusing money sent to her by mistake has been appointed treasurer of a university committee.
Sibongile Mani received a nearly $1 million (£700,000) student grant in her bank account five years ago, and instead of reporting the error, she went on a £70,000 spending spree, purchasing weaves, mobile phones, alcohol, luxury goods, and other items until she was caught.
She was sentenced to five years in prison but was released early, according to local media reports.
Mani has been elected treasurer of the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Eastern Cape convocation committee, according to South African media, but her appointment will not be formally confirmed until later this week after a “vetting” procedure is completed.
