Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has confidently asserted that his tenure at the helm of the Ghana Police Service remains untarnished. He responded to accusations made by COP George Alex Mensah, the Director-General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, claiming that he holds the unenviable title of being the worst IGP in Ghana’s history. Dr. Dampare, addressing the Parliamentary Committee investigating a leaked tape concerning his administration, humorously suggested that COP Mensah may have misspoken, intending to acclaim him as the best IGP in Ghana’s history.

“I believe my colleague intended to express that I am the finest IGP in Ghana’s history. It appears to have been a simple slip of the tongue on his part,” he remarked.

COP Alex Mensah, when appearing before the Committee assigned to probe an alleged plot to oust the IGP on September 1, asserted that he had repeatedly informed the IGP that he held the undesirable title of being the worst. In his view, under the leadership of Dr. Dampare, the police administration was headed in a troubling direction.

“Honorable members and esteemed chair, I have conveyed this message to the IGP on multiple occasions, and if given the opportunity today, I would repeat it without hesitation. Throughout my 31 years of service, I maintain that he is the poorest IGP we’ve ever had, COP Mensah reiterated.

On Thursday, August 31, COP Alex Mensah made several admissions before the Committee.

“Honorable Chair, I will not shy away from this statement today, tomorrow, or any other day. I will assert, once again, that the current Inspector General of Police is not effectively managing the Police Service,” he affirmed. Bugri Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has played a central role in the leaked tape scandal.

The leaked audio recordings purportedly feature conversations involving him and other high-ranking police officials discussing a plot to remove the IGP, purportedly to assist the NPP in manipulating the 2024 elections.
