According to South African police, 87 people have been arrested in connection with opposition protests nationwide.

According to Police Minister Bheki Cele, most of the arrests were made in Gauteng province.

“Most were found making fires, blocking roads, and trying to prevent people from going to work. “They weren’t peaceful,” he explained.

Police in various towns have confiscated over 24,000 tires, according to Mr. Cele.

He stated that police are collaborating with the military to maintain calm.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), an opposition minority party, is leading the so-called national shutdown. Protests began well before Sunday midnight, according to local media.

The EFF is calling for President Cyril Ramaphosa’s resignation and ending the country’s energy crisis.
