According to preliminary results from Nigeria’s presidential election, the ruling party has been defeated by the opposition’s Atiku Abubakar in Katsina, the home state of outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari.

This could be due to dissatisfaction with Mr. Buhari’s eight-year tenure, or it could be that his cult-like following hasn’t rubbed off on his All Progressives Congress (APC) party and its candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Katsina is one of Nigeria’s most insecure states, with many communities ransacked by armed men known locally as bandits.

When I visited in December, many people in the state were dissatisfied with the country’s direction and were apathetic about the elections. The fact that less than a third of eligible voters voted in Katsina demonstrates how dissatisfied many people are.
