Ecowas Dismisses Coup Leader’s Three-Year Timeline for Civilian Rule in Niger.

The stance of the West African regional bloc, Ecowas, remains firm as they label the announcement by Niger’s coup leader, Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani, regarding a three-year delay in restoring civilian rule, as a tactical maneuver during negotiations. Abdel-Fatau Musa, the organization’s political commissioner, expressed strong disapproval of this timetable, deeming it unacceptable.

Gen Tchiani emphasized the necessity of a national dialogue to establish a new political framework in Niger on Saturday. This proposal followed Ecowas’ threat of potential military intervention to reinstate the ousted president.

In the capital city of Niamey, crowds have once again gathered to express support for the coup. However, it’s worth noting that there are segments of the population opposing the military takeover, yet they are hesitant to openly voice their dissent due to perceived repercussions.
