Egypt has named Hossam Hassan, their all-time leading scorer, as the technical director of their national team.
Following the dismissal of Rui Vitoria as coach after Egypt’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the North Africans turned to Hassan to lead the team forward.
Egypt, seven-time champions of the continent, faced defeat against DR Congo in the last 16, succumbing to a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.
Hassan, aged 57, boasts an illustrious career, winning three Nations Cup titles and netting 67 goals in 173 FIFA-recognized matches spanning over 22 years.
His twin brother Ibrahim, a centurion in national caps, assumes the role of national team manager.
The Egyptian Football Association confirmed the appointments via X, following a board meeting on Tuesday.
Hassan brings extensive managerial experience, having led various Egyptian clubs, including two stints with Zamalek, since his coaching debut in 2008. Additionally, he briefly helmed the Jordan national team during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
His inaugural competitive matches with Egypt will be the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau in June.
The Pharaohs began their qualification campaign strongly under Vitoria in November, securing victories in their first two matches.
