Eight Nigerian schoolgirls abducted by gunmen in northern Kaduna state two weeks ago have escaped.
An armed gang kidnapped the students on their way home from a government secondary school in Awon, Kachia.
According to Kaduna State security commissioner Samuel Aruwan, the students fled through a dense forest near the border with Niger state.

He claimed that the students walked for days before being discovered by some villagers.
According to local media, they were taken to a military facility in Kaduna for medical treatment.
Gangs that operate primarily in remote areas of northwestern Nigeria frequently kidnap students and demand large ransom payments for their release.
