Ethiopian Orthodox Church Apologizes to Tigray for Role in Devastating War.
The Holy Synod, the highest decision-making body of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, has issued a heartfelt apology to the people of Tigray for their involvement in the devastating war that unfolded in the region. In a statement released on Thursday, the synod expressed deep regret for not ensuring the safety of church leaders and followers during the conflict.
Criticism has been leveled against the church by bishops, priests, and worshippers in Tigray for their perceived failure to condemn the war, which resulted in the tragic loss of hundreds of thousands of lives. Earlier this year, Tigray bishops even announced their intention to establish an independent church outside the synod and appoint their own bishops.

Since the war concluded in late 2022, the Holy Synod has actively sought reconciliation with the Orthodox leaders in Tigray. Their statement emphasized that they have officially apologized for the delay in delivering humanitarian assistance following the war’s end and the restoration of peace.
A member of the Tigray executive committee of bishops acknowledged the apology as a step in the right direction, emphasizing the church’s belief in the importance of forgiveness. However, he also expressed disappointment that the apology did not fully acknowledge the magnitude of the injustices committed.
The bishop clarified that the Ethiopian Orthodox Church recognizes His Holiness Abune Matthias as their patriarch and has no intentions of appointing any other patriarch. The church is committed to fostering healing, unity, and a brighter future for all its followers.
