Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, has expressed deep concern regarding the deteriorating security situation in the Amhara region. The decision to disband the region’s state-backed paramilitary group in April has contributed to the escalating tensions.

The military’s offensive against armed groups in the region has further exacerbated the situation. Demeke Mekonnen took to his Facebook page to share his worries, stating that the conflict seems to be pushing the communities towards self-destruction without any guidance from elders, wise individuals, or religious leaders.

He emphasized the need for dialogue as the most effective way to address grievances and find solutions to the complex issues. Demeke believes that other means of addressing the problems will only hinder progress and jeopardize the gains made in resolving longstanding issues.

Reports indicate that local militias have taken control of significant towns in the Amhara region, including the historically significant town of Lalibela. The situation remains highly concerning, and the government seeks to find peaceful resolutions to the crisis.
