FBI Director Christopher Wray announced on Wednesday that he plans to step down in January, just before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

In a statement shared with FBI staff and later made public, Wray explained his decision: “After careful thought, I’ve concluded that the best way forward for the bureau is to serve out my duties through the end of this administration and then step aside.”

Wray, who was appointed in 2017 by Trump to lead the 38,000-member agency, had three years left in his 10-year term. However, his relationship with the President-elect has grown increasingly strained.

Trump reacted to Wray’s resignation on Truth Social, calling it “a great day for America,” accusing the FBI of bias under Wray’s leadership. He specifically referenced the FBI’s 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago residence, claiming the bureau had acted unjustly.

Trump stated, “Under Wray’s leadership, the FBI has been weaponized against me and many other Americans. His resignation marks the beginning of restoring justice.”

The search of Mar-a-Lago, carried out to recover classified documents allegedly taken without authorization, led to Trump being charged with mishandling sensitive information. A judge appointed by Trump later dismissed the case.

In his farewell address to the FBI, Wray emphasized the importance of maintaining the bureau’s impartiality. “The American people expect us to remain independent and objective—above politics. That’s what we owe them, and that’s what the bureau must uphold,” he said.

Amid this leadership shift, Kash Patel has emerged as a key figure. Known for his unwavering support of Trump, Patel has been a vocal critic of the FBI. He often promotes the belief in a “deep state” working against the former president. Patel previously held significant roles in Trump’s administration, including serving as a national security advisor and chief of staff to the acting defense secretary.

Trump has praised Patel as the ideal candidate to lead the FBI, describing him as the “most qualified nominee in the agency’s history.” In a statement, Trump expressed optimism about Patel’s potential appointment, saying, “Kash Patel will ensure law, order, and justice are restored. I’m confident he will help Make the FBI Great Again.”

Attorney General Merrick Garland commended Wray’s leadership, describing it as “principled and honorable.” Garland highlighted the critical role of the FBI director in safeguarding the bureau’s independence. “That independence is essential to upholding the rule of law and protecting the freedoms we cherish as Americans,” he said in a statement.

As the leadership transition unfolds, the FBI faces a pivotal moment, with questions about its future direction and commitment to impartiality at the forefront.
