Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, the renowned Afrobeat musician and son of the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has paid tribute to the late Onyeka Onwenu, praising her remarkable legacy.
Onwenu, a celebrated music icon, tragically collapsed at Stella Okoli’s birthday party and passed away on Tuesday night at Reddington Hospital in Lagos.
In a touching tribute shared on X.com on Wednesday, Anikulapo-Kuti expressed his shock and sadness, writing, “Shocked and heartbroken by the news of Mrs. Onyeka Onwenu’s passing. 🕊️💔🕊️ Rest in peace, Ma. Your beautiful voice will live on forever. My deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.”
Former Minister of Education Obiageli Ezekwesili also mourned Onwenu’s passing, calling it “shocking and extremely tragic.”
Ezekwesili reflected on Onwenu’s diverse talents and contributions, praising her as a distinguished Nigerian who brought joy through her work as a journalist, newscaster, songwriter, musician, performer, actor, and producer.
Ezekwesili wrote, “The news of Onyeka Onwenu’s passing is heartbreaking. As ‘The Elegant Stallion,’ she was not only a brilliant artist but also a captivating journalist in the 80s with NTA. Her documentary ‘A Squandering of Riches’ remains a powerful commentary on governance issues in Nigeria.”
She also highlighted Onwenu’s political career, noting that she followed in the footsteps of her father, D.K. Onwenu, and acknowledged the impact of Onwenu’s tribute song, “Ochie Dike Mama,” which has resonated with many since 2010.
Ezekwesili concluded with heartfelt condolences for Onwenu’s family, saying, “We have truly lost a remarkable Nigerian. May God bring comfort and peace to her sons, siblings, and the entire Onwenu family. ✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾”
