The Minister of Information highlights ongoing discussions to explore the feasibility of implementing state policing as a solution to Nigeria’s escalating insecurity.
Following a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and state governors on Thursday, February 15, 2024, in Abuja, it was agreed that the creation of state policing could address the security challenges facing the nation.
According to Mohammed Idris, the Federal Government and state governors are considering the establishment of state police, marking a significant shift in approach. However, he emphasized that further discussions and planning are needed to refine the idea.
Idris stated, “A lot of work has to be done in that direction. Both the Federal Government and the state governments agree on the necessity of having state police.”
He emphasized the need for extensive discussions between the Federal Government and sub-national entities to determine the implementation details. This marks a significant development as it is the first time the Federal Government and state governments have reached a consensus on the issue of state policing.
