John Tia, a seasoned politician and former Information Minister, has passed away.

Tia, who served as the Information Minister during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, breathed his last on Sunday, March 24, at the Upper East Regional Hospital, as reported by Joy TV.

With a career spanning several decades, Tia ventured into politics in 1982, assuming the role of Press Secretary at the Upper East Regional Secretariat of Peoples Defence Committees/Workers Defence Committees under the Provisional National Defence Council military government.

In addition to his tenure as Information Minister, Tia represented the Talensi constituency as a Member of Parliament from the inception of the Fourth Republic in January 1993 until 2012.

He also held the esteemed position of a Member of the ECOWAS Parliament, showcasing his commitment to regional governance.

Tia’s leadership was recognized by President Mills, who appointed him as Minister for Information in 2009. He further contributed to Ghana’s diplomatic efforts as the country’s Ambassador to Cuba during former President John Mahama’s administration.

Despite his contributions, Tia faced electoral defeat in his bid to retain the Talensi seat, losing to independent candidate Robert N. Doameng Mosore.

In 2016, Tia chose not to contest in parliamentary elections, signaling a shift in his political trajectory.
