France Proposes UN Resolution to End Peacekeeping Mission in Mali

France has put forward a draft resolution to the United Nations, suggesting the termination of the peacekeeping mission in Mali by Friday.

The resolution is scheduled for a vote at the UN Security Council on Thursday.

Additionally, it calls for the complete withdrawal of all personnel within a six-month timeframe.

For quite some time, tensions have existed between the UN and Mali’s military junta concerning the presence of the UN force, known as Minusma.

Earlier this month, the Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop urged Minusma to depart without delay. French troops have already left.

Experts express concerns about the potential deterioration of the security situation, which may result in the Russian mercenary group Wagner combating Islamist militants who currently hold significant territories within the country.
