New US Ambassador Set to Begin Role in Niger Amid Ongoing Challenges.
Kathleen Fitzgibbon is poised to assume her responsibilities as the United States ambassador to Niger in the capital city of Niamey.
Her assignment comes during a pivotal period, according to State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel.
Fitzgibbon’s mission involves leading the US efforts in Niger, addressing the coup, and providing assistance to American citizens currently in the country.
Patel did not offer specifics on Fitzgibbon’s travel timeline but clarified that her arrival does not indicate a shift in the US government’s position towards the military takeover.
The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing security, stability, and democracy in the Sahel region.
Patel emphasized, “Her arrival does not signal a change in our stance, and we continue to advocate for a diplomatic resolution that upholds Niger’s constitutional order and the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family.”
Bringing considerable diplomatic experience in Africa, FitzGibbon was confirmed by the US Senate as the Niger ambassador on July 27, shortly after the coup occurred.
The post of US ambassador in Niger had been vacant since December 2021.
