Suspended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, have expressed their support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to suspend Governor Sim Fubara and other lawmakers in the state.
Following Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency, the affected lawmakers will be away from their legislative duties for six months.
In a statement signed by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the lawmakers placed the blame on Governor Fubara, accusing him of disregarding court rulings and failing to uphold his responsibilities in accordance with the Constitution.
The 27 lawmakers insisted that the President’s intervention was necessary and urged the people of Rivers State to remain calm as the appointed Sole Administrator takes over.
The statement reads:
“The governor’s continued defiance of court judgments and his unconstitutional obstruction of the Rivers State House of Assembly have led to this situation.
“As representatives of the people, we will respect the President’s decision, even though it is not what we had hoped for.
“Mr. President has acted in the best interest of the nation, and we ask all citizens to remain peaceful as the Sole Administrator assumes office. The Assembly stands ready to support the Administrator in the interest of our dear state.”
