Gareth Southgate announced his departure from England’s national team following their Euro 2024 final loss to Spain on Sunday. The 53-year-old, who took on the role in 2016, steps down after overseeing 102 matches.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honor of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all,” Southgate said in a heartfelt statement.
He added, “It’s time for change and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my last game as England manager.” During his tenure, Southgate led England to two European Championship finals in 2021 and 2024, as well as a World Cup semifinal.
Although his contract was due to expire in December, Southgate chose to step down amidst mounting scrutiny over the past two years. Under his leadership, England won 61 matches and lost 17. In the four major tournaments he managed, England secured 14 victories, the most by any England manager.
