Efua Ghartey Elected as First Female President of Ghana Bar Association
Efua Ghartey has made history by being elected as the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). The landmark election took place at the Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Ghartey won with a total of 1,208 votes, narrowly beating Kwadzo Dzakpasu, who received 1,060 votes.
In her acceptance speech, Ghartey expressed her gratitude and excitement at this historic achievement. “I am deeply humbled and honored to be the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association. This is a new chapter for the Bar, and I am committed to ensuring that we live up to the trust placed in us,” she said.
She further promised to work diligently to uphold the rule of law and advance justice in Ghana, stating, “We will make you proud and ensure you never regret this choice. I ask for your support as we embark on this journey together.”
Ghartey’s previous candidacies for the GBA presidency saw her narrowly defeated by Tony Forson and Yaw Boafo, the immediate past and current presidents, respectively. Her extensive experience, including her recent role as Chair of the Greater Accra branch of the GBA, has prepared her for this new role.
Her election marks a significant milestone for the GBA, which has traditionally been led by men. Ghartey’s victory is celebrated as a major advancement for women in Ghana’s legal profession.
Her inauguration ceremony is set for Monday, November 4, 2024.
