Ghanaian authorities say 1,000 soldiers and police officers have been deployed to a north-eastern border town after gunmen killed an immigration officer and injured two others.

It is unclear who opened fire on their vehicle in Bawku on Tuesday, but the security situation there is concerning due to the escalating jihadist conflict in neighboring Burkina Faso.

There are concerns that Islamist militants wreaking havoc in the Sahel region will destabilize countries further south, such as Ghana and Ivory Coast.

Bawku has a long history of ethnic tensions that have resulted in outbreaks of violence.
