President-elect of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has condemned post-election attacks on state institutions by some youths. The former President emphasized that such acts of violence against public infrastructure would harm citizens and undermine the effectiveness of state institutions.
“My fellow Ghanaians, I stand before you tonight as your President-elect to express my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support during Saturday’s election. This is a moment of hope, unity, and opportunity for our nation. However, I must address an urgent issue.
“Transitions from one government to another often create a sense of uncertainty. Unfortunately, some individuals are prone to acting in their narrow interests instead of focusing on the national good. I have received reports of attacks on state offices and facilities. Though it remains unclear who is behind these attacks, I strongly condemn them. These actions must end immediately,” Mahama stated.
The President-elect also called on the Nana Akufo-Addo administration to take decisive measures to address these reports of lawlessness in certain parts of the country. He urged the youth to avoid expressing their frustrations through violence and instead channel their efforts toward rebuilding Ghana’s economy.
“As I emphasized during my post-declaration speech, I call on the youth not to vent their frustrations through criminal acts. Instead, they should redirect their energy toward rebuilding and resetting our nation. I urge all citizens to remain calm and avoid actions that could harm our institutions and democracy. We have fought hard for change, and now is the time to demonstrate our commitment to building the Ghana we aspire to through unity and understanding.
“Since state power remains in the hands of the current administration, I urge President Akufo-Addo and the security forces to act decisively in curbing these acts of lawlessness,” he added.
