In Ghana, the assault on a radio presenter during a live broadcast has sparked outrage.

On Wednesday, Abubakar Sadiq Gariba, a broadcaster at Dagbon FM in the northern city of Tamale, was on air when two men stormed into the studio and grabbed him by the neck.

They threatened him with a slap if he said anything. The presenter then exited the studio with the two assailants.

Gariba has told the BBC that he is fine, but an argument has erupted outside the studio.

One of the men, he said, was a regular panelist on his show.

According to the report, the man, a local politician, was irritated by Gariba’s perceived criticism of his position on a chieftaincy dispute in the area.

The two attackers have not responded.

The incident’s video has gone viral on social media, raising concerns about Ghana’s recent record on press freedom.

Former President John Mahama has urged the government to improve conditions for journalists.

A dozen men attacked Radio Ada in southern Ghana over a year ago, destroying equipment and assaulting journalists. The police did not charge the perpetrators.

There’s also the unsolved murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein Suale, who was shot dead in Accra in 2019.
