In the past week, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has recorded 31 new cases of COVID-19 in the country. Dr. Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, the Programs Manager of the Expanded Programme on Immunization at the Ghana Health Service, clarified that these cases are not severe.
Addressing the media in Accra, Dr. Amponsah-Achiano announced that the Ghana Health Service will launch a vaccination campaign starting on Sunday, May 5, 2024, to combat the spread of the virus.
“We’ve seen a rise in numbers recently, reaching around 30 or 31 cases. However, this isn’t unexpected. COVID-19 is here to stay, and that’s why we continue our vaccination efforts. From May 5th to 9th, we’ll conduct another round of COVID vaccination nationwide,” he stated.
The Health Service has initiated a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign in response to escalating infections across healthcare facilities. Running from May 4 to May 10, 2024, the drive aims to curb the surge in cases, particularly in Greater Accra, where the highest numbers have been reported.
Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, stressed the need for widespread vaccination to contain the virus’s spread. He urged all Ghanaians to participate actively in the campaign during a media briefing.
“We’re seeing cases reported in parts of Accra and a few other regions, underscoring the importance of vaccination. From May 4th to 10th, we’ll conduct a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign, and we encourage all Ghanaians to join in,” Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe emphasized.
