Kenya’s riot police are on the streets of Nairobi, the country’s capital, to prevent opposition-led protests over high living costs and alleged election malpractice.
There is also a heavy police presence in Kibera and Mathare, the city’s two largest informal settlements, where protesters are being prevented from entering the city center.
According to reports, a car carrying local journalists in Kibera was attacked by a crowd, and its occupants were robbed at knifepoint.
Shops in downtown Nairobi have been closed due to fears of looting.
Tear gas was fired to disperse crowds of protesters led by their local governor in the western city of Kisumu, an opposition stronghold.
Police have stated that they will photograph protesters and charge them for participating in illegal protests.
