“I Almost Broke Down” — Funke Akindele Speaks on Social Media Hate After Actress’ Death
Funke Akindele is known for making people laugh, but recently, she shared a side of herself that wasn’t so cheerful.
During a powerful sit-down on the first live episode of the WithChude podcast, the actress and filmmaker got real about the emotional toll public backlash took on her after the passing of Jenifa’s Diary cast member, Jumoke Aderounmu.
Even with years in the spotlight and a reputation for being resilient, Funke admitted that the wave of online accusations and trolling hit her at a time when she was already struggling silently.
“I’m used to criticism,” she said. “But this time, it felt different. People blamed me for something I had no hand in… and I was already in a dark place mentally.”
Feeling overwhelmed, she recalled locking herself in a room, away from everyone, and going live on Instagram to speak her truth.
“Some people lock the door and never come out,” she said quietly. “I thank God I just went in there to talk.”
It was a raw and honest moment—one that reminded everyone that even the strongest need support too.
