During her sentencing on Friday, April 12, 2024, Bobrisky, also known as Idris Okuneye, made a striking revelation in court. When asked about her gender by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, Bobrisky asserted, “I am a man.”

This unexpected declaration unfolded amidst Bobrisky’s legal ordeal with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Initially arrested for naira mutilation, Bobrisky faced additional charges of money laundering, which were later dismissed by the court.

In a poignant exchange with Justice Awogboro, Bobrisky’s response shed light on the challenges faced by transwomen navigating Nigeria’s legal system. Despite her identification as a woman in public life, the courtroom interaction underscored the complexities of gender identity within the Nigerian judiciary.

Subsequently, the judge sentenced Bobrisky to six months in prison without the option of a fine for the naira abuse offense. The prison term, effective from March 24, 2024, reflects the severity of the judicial ruling.

During the proceedings, Bobrisky expressed remorse for her actions, pleading guilty and seeking leniency. She proposed using her influential platform to educate the public on the legal implications of money spraying, hoping for a chance to rectify her mistake.

However, the judge emphasized that ignorance of the law does not excuse wrongdoing, highlighting the accountability expected from all citizens, irrespective of their social standing or influence.
