Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to introduce a living allowance for the Chieftaincy institution if he emerges victorious in the 2024 election.

Speaking at the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs during his tour of the region, the Vice President highlighted the importance of providing financial support to enhance the effectiveness of the Chieftaincy institution.

Dr. Bawumia stressed the need for the institution to have adequate financial resources and empowerment to play a supportive role in governance.

“In order for the Chieftaincy institution to fulfill its responsibilities effectively, it must be adequately funded. You cannot delegate responsibilities without providing the necessary resources,” he stated.

He went on to announce plans to include the provision of a living allowance for the Chieftaincy institution in their manifesto. Currently, paramount chiefs receive GH₵1,000 a month, which Dr. Bawumia deemed insufficient even for covering petrol expenses to attend meetings.

Additionally, he highlighted the lack of payments for queen mothers or divisional chiefs, emphasizing the importance of extending living allowances to all levels within the Chieftaincy institution.

Dr. Bawumia’s commitment underscores the significance of the Chieftaincy institution in governance and community development. The proposed allowances aim to empower the institution, enabling it to play a more impactful role in advancing national progress.
