The former New Zealand Prime Minister has been credited as playing a “crucial” role in the award’s early success.
Kensington Palace has confirmed that Jacinda Ardern has been appointed as a trustee of Prince William’s Earthshot Prize.
The former New Zealand Prime Minister’s political experience and “life-long commitment” to climate action, according to the Prince of Wales, will bring a “rich infusion” to the Prize.
Ms. Ardern, who resigned as Prime Minister in January, claiming she did not have “enough in the tank” to run for re-election, was dubbed “crucial” to the award’s early success.
The Prince said of the appointment, “It is an honor to welcome Jacinda to The Earthshot Prize team.” Her lifelong commitment to environmental and sustainable solutions, combined with her experience as Prime Minister of New Zealand, will bring a rich infusion of new thinking to our mission.
“Jacinda was one of the first people I spoke to four years ago, before The Earthshot Prize even had a name, and her encouragement and advice were critical to the Prize’s early success.”
“I am extremely grateful to her for joining us as she advances in her career.”
“I have long been inspired by Jacinda’s work as a catalyzing force in the effort to combat climate change,” said Christiana Figueres, chair of trustees of The Earthshot Prize.
“She is a fantastic environmental innovator, and her perspective, experience, and guidance will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the entire Earthshot Prize organization.
“My fellow trustees and I are overjoyed to have Jacinda in her new position.”
Ms. Ardern spoke at a summit hosted by The Earthshot Prize in New York in September last year on behalf of William, who remained in the UK following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Earthshot Prize, created by William, recognizes efforts and inventions that address critical environmental issues ranging from air pollution to climate change.
