Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, dropped a bombshell on Friday, announcing his departure from the club at the end of the season due to feeling “running out of energy”.
Klopp, who transformed Liverpool into one of European football’s giants since taking charge in 2015, expressed that leaving was a decision he felt compelled to make.
The German guided Liverpool to their first league title in 30 years in 2020 and clinched the Champions League trophy in 2019.
With Liverpool leading the Premier League by five points, the 56-year-old aims to exit on a high note by securing another league title.
“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time,” Klopp shared in an interview on Liverpool’s website. “I love absolutely everything about this club… But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.”
Klopp revealed he made the decision in November during discussions about potential signings for the next season.
While Liverpool faced challenges during the 2022/23 season, Klopp emphasized the importance of leaving on a positive note as the rejuvenated squad vies for four trophies.
Reflecting on his impact, Klopp expressed, “For me it was super, super, super-important that I can help to bring this team back onto the rails.”
Acknowledging Klopp’s significant contributions, FSG president Mike Gordon expressed deep appreciation and respect for Klopp’s leadership and wished him well.
Liverpool’s backroom staff, including assistant Pep Lijnders, will also depart, with Lijnders pursuing his managerial career.
FSG, Liverpool’s owner, assured that the search for Klopp’s successor would commence promptly.
