Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a contender vying for the flagbearer position within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has gracefully dismissed parallels drawn between his presidential aspirations and those of former American President Donald Trump. While he acknowledges the likeness in their roles as businessmen, Agyapong firmly establishes that in the realm of politics, they diverge greatly. With over 32 years of political engagement, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central underscores his extensive experience, a significant contrast to Trump’s political trajectory.
Agyapong asserts that certain policies implemented during Donald Trump’s presidency bore adverse consequences for the common citizen, a factor that prompts him to firmly reject any association with the former US leader.
“I embrace the title of being a man of business and when Donald Trump is mentioned within that context, I concur. However, if one were to assert that my political demeanor mirrors that of Donald Trump, I would vehemently disagree. My journey in politics spans approximately 32 years. Donald Trump, while indeed a distinguished businessman, entered the realm of politics with the intention of initiating change. Certain policies he introduced proved rather austere for the ordinary citizens. In my case, I prioritize the welfare of the ordinary people above the elite,” Agyapong articulates. Beyond clarifying his stance on the comparison to Trump, Agyapong proceeds to provide a succinct description of his political philosophy.
“Although the NPP’s alignment often resonates with Republican ideals, my allegiance leans towards the Democratic spectrum. Democrats consistently craft policies designed to uplift the ordinary citizens. The decision-making process within the Republican camp sometimes culminates in decisions that weigh heavily on the average citizen. Neither a conservative nor a socialist, I find my political identity as a liberal,” he elucidates.
In an engaging conversation with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi TV’s “Face to Face,” Agyapong confidently assumes the moniker of “the people’s man,” underscoring his dedication to representing and advocating for the interests of the populace.
