Kenya has designated this Friday as a national day of remembrance and action in response to the devastating floods that have claimed over 200 lives and affected millions across the country.
President William Ruto announced the initiative on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of tree planting to combat climate change, a major contributor to the flood crisis.
In a bid to address the environmental challenges exacerbated by climate change, the government plans to declare Friday as National Tree Growing Day, according to government spokesman Isaac Mwaura. Further guidance on this initiative will be provided by the environment minister.
This isn’t the first time Kenya has prioritized tree planting efforts. Last year, the government initiated a national holiday dedicated to planting 100 million trees, aiming to plant a total of 15 billion trees within a decade.
