Raila Odinga, Kenya’s former prime minister, claimed that his car was shot at seven times during anti-government protests on Thursday and that it was an attempt on his life.
During a press conference, Mr. Odinga stated that police targeted his vehicle and the vehicles of other opposition leaders during a protest procession in Nairobi’s Eastlands neighborhood.
He also accused police of targeting journalists during anti-government demonstrations and claimed there were plans to attack the Nairobi offices of the leading Royal Media Services group.
Mr. Odinga accused the international community of ignoring human rights violations committed by the authorities during the protests.
He said the opposition would stage a large protest on April 3 to put pressure on the government to lower living costs and implement electoral reforms, among other demands.
Six journalists were injured during Thursday’s protests, bringing the total number of media practitioners injured since the demonstrations began last week to 22.
“Recent reports of attacks on journalists have alarmed the United States. The protection of press freedom and safety is a tenet of democracy “On Friday morning, Ambassador Meg Whitman tweeted.
