William Ruto, the president of Kenya, has arrived in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, to begin “a two-day official visit,” according to a tweet from the country’s communications minister.

The timing of this travel was unexpected, despite the possibility of a visit being suggested when the Eritrean foreign minister visited Kenya last week.

No announcement regarding the visit’s continuation or release of the itinerary was made by the Kenyan government.

In the past, there have been tense relations between Kenya and Eritrea.

The Eritrean ministry of communications reported last week that Mr. Ruto had “emphasized the necessity for countries in the area to work together for realizing peace and stability as well as political and economic developments” when he met with Foreign Minister Osman Saleh.
Eritrea has come under fire for supporting the federal government against the Tigrayans during the two-year civil war in neighboring Ethiopia.
Although a peace agreement is officially in effect, Tigrayans claim that Eritrean troops have still not left the area.
One of the African Union’s designated brokers for the peace agreement reached in South Africa last month was Kenya’s former president Uhuru Kenyatta.
