Kenya’s President William Ruto has condemned Monday’s opposition protests, which turned violent and resulted in property damage, including the invasion of a farm owned by former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s family.

President Ruto told Kenyans in Berlin that he would not allow impunity to be part of the country’s discourse. He vowed to ensure the safety of all Kenyans and businesses by granting the police the authority to enforce law and order in the country.

On Monday night, unknown assailants destroyed a church and a mosque in Nairobi after protestors engaged police in running battles.

Religious leaders condemned the attack on Monday, urging politicians to consider dialogue and preach peace.

Raila Odinga, a veteran opposition leader, has accused the state of inciting violence so that protests devolve into chaos and result in death.

Mr. Odinga says the opposition will not back down from their demands for a review of the 2022 elections, the formation of an electoral commission, and addressing the rising cost of living.
