Kenyan President William Ruto’s decision to soften his stance in the face of opposition protests has opened the way for talks, according to opposition leader Raila Odinga.

President Ruto addressed the nation for the first time since the protests began over high living costs and alleged electoral irregularities on Sunday.

One of Mr. Odinga’s demands was granted: a bipartisan engagement in parliament on the formation of the next electoral commission.

However, he indicated that he will not engage the opposition leader on his other demands, such as the cost of living and the legitimacy of his presidency.

In an interview, Mr. Odinga praised Mr. Ruto’s “climbdown” and insisted that all issues be discussed.

That’s why we said that we can embrace dialogue so long as he’s ready to put all the issues that we are talking about on the table.”
