Buckingham Palace announced on Monday that doctors have diagnosed cancer in Britain’s King Charles III while treating him for an enlarged prostate over a week ago. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak mentioned on BBC News that the cancer was detected early, offering hope for the monarch’s recovery.

It’s understood that King Charles III has been diagnosed with a form of cancer elsewhere in his body, unrelated to his prostate condition. The 75-year-old monarch, discharged a week ago after treatment for the non-cancerous prostate issue, has commenced regular treatments for the newly discovered cancer. While undergoing treatment, he will temporarily reduce public-facing duties but continue his official responsibilities.

King Charles III ascended to the throne less than two years ago following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022. His health had generally been robust, with a previous noncancerous growth removed from his face in 2008.

The King’s recent medical issues also drew attention to the health of his daughter-in-law, Kate, the Princess of Wales, who underwent abdominal surgery at the same private London clinic. She’s reported to be recovering well, with her husband, Prince William, the Prince of Wales, returning to royal duties soon after supporting her during her recovery.

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, who resides in the U.S. with his wife Meghan, is expected to visit his father in the U.K. after being informed of the diagnosis. President Biden expressed his concern for King Charles III’s health during a campaign trip, offering prayers for his swift recovery, acknowledging the challenges of facing cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The news of King Charles III’s diagnosis has prompted an outpouring of support and well wishes, reflecting the widespread concern for his health and hope for his recovery.
