South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province is on high alert following a weather service warning that “large parts of KZN can expect disruptive rainfall, with the possibility of widespread flooding on Thursday and Friday,” according to the local government’s Facebook page.

Last year, the province was hit by devastating floods that affected approximately 40,000 people and killed at least 400. Authorities have since issued flood safety advice, including warnings to avoid crossing low-lying bridges and to drive cautiously. The weather service issued a level-nine warning for KwaZulu-Natal, indicating that there could be a threat to life and people’s displacement.
