Staff at a Nigerian secondary school have been charged with manslaughter in the death of a 12-year-old girl, with a trial set to begin in May.

An autopsy revealed that the Chrisland High School student died of asphyxiation and electrocution.

The school has been closed since her death. Last year, the same school was temporarily closed due to an alleged case of sexual assault involving students on a trip to Dubai.

Several other schools in Lagos have recently been closed following allegations of student deaths as a result of bullying, a fatal accident, and a suspected drowning during a swimming lesson.

Parents and residents of various schools are calling for increased oversight.

Others have called for harsh sanctions against the schools involved to hold management accountable and prevent future tragedies.
