Lizzo used Twitter to condemn “complicit silence” in the fight against bigotry. On Wednesday (March 8), the Special singer tweeted about the link between transphobia and racism, questioning why people began believing such hateful ideologies.
“Right now, transphobia is looking real rooted in racism,” the “About Damn Time” artist said. “I’ve never heard anyone explain why they’re racist…or fatphobic… I’ve never heard an explanation for why someone is transphobic. If we knew ‘why’ these people felt this way, I believe there would be far less support for these ideals. Because the ‘why’ is far more subtle than we realize.”

The Grammy winner later speculated that “complicit silence and apathetic participation” “wouldn’t fly” if people were more educated.
This isn’t the first time the artist from Detroit has spoken out against discriminatory beliefs. During a keynote discussion at SXSW in March 2022, the “2 Be Loved” entertainer criticized Texas’ anti-transgender legislation and abortion policies.

“I’m proud to represent Houston, but I’m not proud to represent Texas politics right now. “There are very regressive laws being passed,” she told NBC. “They are taking away the right of young children to live authentically as themselves. It constitutes a violation of human rights. Human rights include transgender rights.”
