John Dramani Mahama Criticizes Government’s Priorities on Saglemi Housing Project and National Cathedral.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed strong disapproval of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision to abandon the Saglemi Housing Project and allocate over GHc500 million to the National Cathedral project.

Taking to Facebook, the former President alleged that the government’s abandonment of the Saglemi Housing project was solely because it was initiated during his administration.

On Tuesday, August 1, President Akufo-Addo held a sod-cutting ceremony to commence the construction of 8,000 units of affordable houses with support from the private sector. During the ceremony, the President justified the decision to abandon the Saglemi Housing Project, citing concerns about increased national debt if it were to be completed.

In response to President Akufo-Addo’s explanation, former President Mahama criticized the government, claiming that while the Saglemi housing project struggles for funds, allocating a significant amount to the National Cathedral is a “humiliating slap in the face of Ghanaians.”

He argued that the government’s priorities seem misplaced, as it is willing to invest in a massive civil excavation for the National Cathedral but neglects a housing project that aims to provide affordable homes for Ghanaians.

Former President Mahama stated, “Leaders must always prioritize the well-being of their citizens and ensure that they benefit from government resources and projects, regardless of who initiated them.”

He highlighted the potential benefits of completing the Saglemi housing project for thousands of Ghanaian families, expressing concern for the countless number of families and individuals who could have had decent living conditions and a place to call home in Saglemi over the past seven years.

The debate over the allocation of resources between the Saglemi Housing Project and the National Cathedral project continues to stir discussions among Ghanaians, raising questions about the government’s handling of its development projects.
